I Know Why Trump Is Punishing Cuba
(Spanish translation follows – En español a continuación)
In 1998 I attended a Travel Industry event in Boston where the keynote speaker was Donald Trump, owner of the Trump Shuttle airline. (since bankrupt) During the Q & A questions were mostly posed about his casinos and hotels, but one young lady asked a seemingly out-of-place question: she asked Trump about any plans to go into Cuba.
“I’d love to go into Cuba, I could turn their economy around. I could do for Varadero Beach what I did for Atlantic City.” It was odd that when he left the lady who posed that question was part of his entourage.
Knowing Trump’s penchant for starting rumors about himself I thought he must have had something in the works about Cuba but there was never any news on the subject. Until June 25, 1999. On that day, an OpEd piece by Trump appeared in the Miami Herald in which he claimed that European interests had pressed him to form joint ventures in Cuba, but that he could not in good conscience go along.
“Several large European investment groups have asked me to take the ‘Trump Magic’ to Cuba,” Trump wrote. “They have ‘begged’ me to form partnerships to build casino-hotels in Havana. With the influx of foreign tourists, we would make a fortune, they promise, and they are no doubt right. They are also right to say that this type of arrangement would allow me to skirt the U.S.-imposed embargo.
“But rushing to join those who would do business in Cuba would do more than that,” Trump continued. “It would place me directly at odds with the longstanding U.S. policy of isolating Fidel Castro. I had a choice to make: huge profits or human rights. For me, it was a no-brainer.”
Human rights above profits? Those words from Donald Trump? This is a man who as President of the United States is trying to con Americans into taking an unproven and potentially dangerous drug for COVID 19 because his family has a financial stake in the manufacturer.
Great timing that the day after this Editorial was posted, Trump who was seeking the Reform Party nomination for president was addressing the Miami-based extremist group the Cuban American National Foundation where he received a hero’s welcome for his stinging editorial.
His editorial contained virulent attacks on Fidel Castro that only someone with deep knowledge of the US – Cuba history and all its talking points would know. I suspect Cuban-American blogger Mauricio Claver-Carone was probably the ghost writer. The editorial also contained criticism of Cuba’s system of contracting with foreign companies for employees with Trump stating he could not stand by and watch employees being taken advantage of financially.
This from a man whose hotels both in the US and abroad have been cited for various personnel infractions including employing undocumented workers at sub-minimum wages.
Trump further wrote: “Castro urgently wants the United States to lift the embargo because he is desperate for hard currency to keep his faltering Communist economy afloat. Of course, he would love for Donald Trump to come to Havana and build casino/hotels. Why? Not to raise the standard of living for the people of Cuba. Quite the contrary. Almost every dollar would go to prop up his police state. But I’d rather lose those millions than lose my self-respect. I would rather take a financial hit than become a financial backer to one of the world’s most brutal dictators.”
Trump claims he declined to pursue hotel/casino investments in Cuba because of his disdain for the ‘ruthless dictator Fidel Castro’ and his labor policies. This from a man who as President of the United States ‘fell in love’ with North Korea’s Kim Jung Un, a brutal dictator who had members of his family assassinated and who tortured an American college student to the edge of death. Trump gave Kim a pass on the later when Kim denied knowing anything about Otto Wormbier’s torture.
The editorial was more graphic than what is printed here and was ‘red meat’ for the Cuban-American crowd he would be addressing the next day, not a business executive’s explanation of a strategic decision.
The editorial was a bunch of garbage! Trump paid a consulting firm Seven Arrows Investment and Development Corp. $68,000 to pursue hotel/casino projects in Cuba in violation of the US Embargo. This was reported by Newsweek in a September 29, 2016 cover story. The money paid to Seven Arrows was disguised as a donation to Caritas International, a Catholic Charity to avoid being censured for violating US Law. Of course he never told the editorial readers or his CANF audience that he had actually sent representatives to Cuba in violation of the Embargo. CANF would have pilloried him.
Let me here employ two American colloquialisms. 1.) Trump did not stand a snowball’s chance in Hell of getting casino-hotel projects in Cuba approved. 2.) Trying to get those approvals was like trying to get milk from a bull; it is impossible.
What went wrong? As someone with 29 years consulting experience allow me to offer an explanation. Whenever a business entity is about to engage in a major venture such as a merger with another company or a large-scale investment there is a process called Due Diligence. Simply explained it means doing your homework and studying your potential ally, acquisition target, or joint venture, their assets, liabilities, strengths, weaknesses, and political implications of the locale.
Seven Arrows was paid a king’s ransom for what little value they offered Trump. They probably incurred the cost of airfare to and from Havana through a third country, some artist renderings, and their likely short ‘face time’ with Cuban Officials. I doubt he was in the room, but I could hear Fidel saying, “Take your damn pictures and casino ideas and get to hell off my Island.” Probably about $3,000 worth of consulting. Bill the client $68,000? Good work if you can get it.
Had Seven Arrows done the most basic of Due Diligence they could have saved Trump a good bit of money. The issue of contracting employees would have been an obvious fact because it was current practice. But a search into Cuba’s history would have uncovered an absolute obstacle to any such proposal, namely that running the US Mafia and their casinos and brothels out of Cuba had been a major cornerstone of Fidel Castro’s Revolution.
Mobsters ‘Lucky’ Luciano and Meyer Lansky – who hosted a gathering of US Mob Bosses in Havana in 1946 fled Cuba immediately after Batista left Cuba. The country was in Castro’s hands. Batista had announced at a New Years Eve Party December 31, 1958 at the Nacional Hotel that he was leaving the country. (This event is memorialized in The Godfather Two movie)
The Mobsters headed West and set up shop in Las Vegas, eventually coming East to Trump’s Atlantic City. By the way, Batista fled for the Dominican Republic with $300 Million in cash that he had skimmed from the casinos since taking power in 1952, as well as artwork.
This was a blow to Lansky who had provided guns and ammunition to Castro’s Rebels. But Castro was a man of deep principle, and he was not going to undermine his Revolution for Mob financial support. In 1998 having proven in his mind his Communist system was working, he certainly never would have allowed the return of casinos to Cuba. Especially not those under the auspices of Trump who was reportedly in bed with the mob in his Atlantic City Casinos.
No doubt Trump had boasted to friends and business associated that he was on his way to bringing the ‘Trump Magic’ to Cuba. He had to save face and the Miami Herald Editorial was his vehicle for that. But there can be no doubt that he was seething because no one (except US bankers) says ‘No’ to Donald Trump, especially Fidel Castro who Trump likely saw as intellectually inferior to him.
In his housing, hotel, and casino history Trump has a record of being spiteful and vindictive against people who have caused him any difficulty. The issue could have been addressed and put to bed by his consultants with proper due diligence, so he was left to appear that he had hired unqualified consultants.
There is no doubt that Trump has felt animus towards Fidel Castro since 1998 for Castro having rebuffed his overture, and he is now taking his revenge on the Cuban People in debilitating ways, virtually starving them with the Embargo.
I believe the situation will only exacerbate itself, and that Trump has even more sinister plans for Cuba in order to extract revenge for Castro’s intransigence. With the warped former Blogger Mauricio Claver-Carone by his side at the National Security Council one can only imagine the cruelty in the offing.

Explicado de forma sencilla, significa hacer los deberes y estudiar a su posible aliado, objetivo de adquisición o empresa conjunta, sus activos, pasivos, fortalezas, debilidades e implicaciones políticas del lugar.
A Seven Arrows se le pagó un rescate del rey por el poco valor que le ofrecieron a Trump. Probablemente incurrieron en el costo del pasaje aéreo desde y hacia La Habana a través de un tercer país, algunas representaciones artísticas, y su probable corto “tiempo cara a cara” con los funcionarios cubanos. Dudo que estuviera en la habitación, pero pude oír a Fidel diciendo, “Toma tus malditas fotos e ideas de casino y vete al infierno fuera de mi isla”. Probablemente unos 3.000 dólares de consultoría. ¿Facturar al cliente 68.000 dólares? Buen trabajo si lo consigues.
Si Seven Arrows hubiera hecho lo más básico de la diligencia debida, podría haber ahorrado a Trump un buen dinero.
